Bottle Feeding Recipe for Puppies

Bottle Feeding Recipe

10 oz. of canned evaporated milk OR whole goat's milk (mary:fresh goat's milk is my first choice when it's available), (not pasteurized cow's milk - this will cause scowers - dogs cannot drink normal cow's milk. Dogs cannot drink 1%, 2%, Skim, or Whole milk.) Whole goat's milk is by far the best to use. Walmart sells both evaporated milk, whole goat's milk and evaporated goats milk. Make sure you are using EITHER evaporated milk OR whole goat's milk. Do NOT use sweetened condensed milk!

3 oz. sterilized water (baby water OR boiled water that is then cooled).
This is NOT needed if using whole goat's milk.
1 raw egg yolk.
1 cup of plain yogurt (avoid skim or fat free if at all possible).
1/2 Tsp Karo Syrup or Corn Syrup (mary: I prefer Blackstrap Molasses)(NOT HONEY!)
****If you cannot find Karo or Corn syrup where you live, you can do a Google search for “substitute for Karo syrup” and get some options.****

When you Google “substitute for Karo syrup" here is what you may came up with- 1 c Karo can be subbed with 1 c white sugar and 1/4 c hot water (cook it to dissolve in the water best you can get it to. Depending on the recipe, if you need the sugar to be completely dissolved you might need to add a bit more water).

Place ingredients in a blender and blend or use a wire whisk. Be careful to not over blend and create a milk shake full of bubbles and then tube bubbles into the puppy.

Keep cool and discard leftovers after 7 days.

Warm formula to body temperature (dogs are around 101 degrees). Discard any un-used formula. This is a thick mixture - use a stomach tube to tube feed or enlarge the hole in the nipple for easy access for the pup

Was house broken in two weeks. My only complaint would be that she is a little hard to obedience train because she doesn't care that much about food." This is Griz at 10 months, living in Ava, Missouri with Dan & Kathleen. Kathleen writes "Other than him barking at ??? in the wee hours of the morning (between 12:01 am and 5:00 am!), he is being a good boy. He likes to chase the barn cats, but he doesn’t even attempt it with the inside cat. He doesn’t chase the chickens which is good and he has met the cattle and he keeps his distance and isn’t a pain.

His sheep whine when he is not in the pen area with him, even though I have caught him chasing them (and yes, I’ve scolded him…doesn’t mean he stops). I think a lot of it is puppy stuff, especially like last night when it was cool and all the critters were feeling their oats. He was fired up! I’m not sure if there is a way to teach him what is appropriate to bark at and what isn’t, but we’ll figure it out." Griz is out of Alec and Tig.

Lost Horizons Alec of Avanos DOB: 9/05 OFA: GOOD
Alec came to us from Northern California, Napa Valley area, from Lost Horizons Kennel owned by Chris and Jill Maxwell. We started Alec off in our home instead of the goat area, but he did go out daily with me to feed the goats and frolic with my other Anatolians. As an adult he does spend time in the pasture with his goats.

Alec started conformation classes, at 12 wks., through the Ozark Kennel Club in Springfield, Missouri. He was our first Anatolian to show AKC. We've had wonderful fun showing him and it encouraged us to continue showing with several of our other Anatolians. We traveled to shows in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Texas, New Mexico and California.

Love this photo of him in the snow. Alec has a wonderful loving character and enjoys life to the fullest. He is sired by Pilotspeak The Scout Master out of Birinci/Night Watch lines and Lost Armadillo's Dream Catcher through CH Gerlach Beau and Orchard House's K.D.

A Visit to the Houston Zoo

We had the pleasure of visiting the Anatolians that came from us in 2007 at the Houston Zoo.

We arrived just in time to view their special presentation for the Cheetah Conservation Fund.

This is Taji, their female Anatolian. Taji was walked out by one of her keepers along with one of their male Cheetahs. The presentation was informative and enjoyable.

Taji and her brother Tusker are 2 1/2 years old.

Taji is used for the presentations with the Cheetahs. Tusker has developed more of a livestock guardian character who loves Taji and his Cheetahs as well as his keepers.

We were able to go behind the scenes and meet Taji and Tusker. They turned out just lovely.

Our First Anatolian - Pilots Peak Rudder

This is my girl Rudder. She came to us in 1999 at 11 months old. Rudder was a big girl and as sweet as can be.

This new goat Mama was completely comfortable with Rudder being so close.

Rudder just had her first litter of pups at this time. The pups were only about 2 wks. old and she still felt driven to be out with our goat girls when they gave birth. One very devoted guardian. Her pups were only an ear shot away.

Here are Rudders pups from her first and only litter. The Nubian kids just had to come and visit. Notice how careful they are about where they step. Visitation rights were only allowed when we were there.

As you can see, that wonderful full winter coat just comes out in chunks

Brushing will hasten its journey in blowing and feel wonderful for your Anatolian.
Noticed that not all bloodlines blow coat like this boy. Some are minimal. All love to be brushed

"Hollie Colahan, our curator of primates and carnivores, and Kevin Hodge, carnivore supervisor, are prepared to talk about our program but the reporters must understand that it will probably be six months to 12 months before the cheetahs are going to be seen with the dogs and then it will only be for special events. The dogs on the other hand will be seen before the cheetahs…but it will still be a month or two – they need to acclimate to their new home and the keepers. The goal of the program is not only to raise awareness about cheetah conservation but also, with the help of your wonderful dogs, to talk about responsible pet ownership."

The idea is to be able to discuss not only the threats to the cheetah but also what's being done to save them - this is where the Anatolians come in. We will be doing presentations/special events with both the cheetahs and the dogs - this is one reason we are getting two of each. We want all of them to be able to have a break. We are not the first zoo to do this and
we will be following protocols set by other facilities (and have been talking to several other facilities about their programs) - adjusting them as need be for our own situation.

Taji was pictured in the Houston Zoo Wildlife magazine, Winter 2007…
Tusker, the male, is also spending time with them and they are doing great! Everyone here at the zoo loves them and is so surprised at how calm they are and how good they are with the cheetah.
They are very compatible but their personalities are quite different. Tusker is more calm but also stubborn – he’s prone to moping when he doesn’t get his way. He is so patient with the cheetahs though, even when they bite his tail! Taji is more lively and is really into her training. They are learning some basic obedience and walking on the leash so far.

They spend their day going for walks in the zoo, being introduced to the cheetahs, and playing in their yard. They are great with people, including kids, and are spending time out in the zoo now meeting our guests.

Ice Storm Hits SW Missouri

These are the hills North of Turkey Mtn. area looking West and Southwest taken Jan. 19, 2007

An Ice Storm hit our area pretty hard. Amazingly we did not get much of it located where we were by the creek. Power went out all around us with several hundred power poles snapping because of the weight from the ice. But, we were just fine....

The tree damage was intense north of us with a tremendous amount of clean up still in progress. The trees all look as if high winds took the tops and snapped them off.

Dilara got butt by one of the Bucks while the bucks were playing. Took her to the vet to make sure all was well. Here she is sitting in the window sill waiting for her turn.

The x-ray showed she was fine, but she did need something for the headache and time to be alone. Thought this was an excellent x-ray and wanted to share.

This is Flower giving birth to her second kid. I'm just holding this kid between contractions at this point. Flower had problems that needed my attention. She went into labor, not hard labor, but had no progression. Upon an examination by me I found out that the first kid being presented was breech trying to come out tail first. So, with patience and gentle persistance I, with the help of my husband and my friend, Bess on the phone, was able to manipulate the kid and managed to straighten out both back legs for an easier delivery. The kid was extremely weak but with effort we were able to help pull her through. This is Melek shown with one of the other two that Flower gave birth to that were both presented head first both forelegs back. More manipulation. All three kids are just fine. Two doelings and one buckling.

This is the first little doe kid in the house after being warmed up and given some colostrum. She just could not stand on the wood floor.

Poor guy, he even had two staples in his rear leg, show side inside, where he went through a barbed wire fence just four days earlier. He was not favoring it enough to be pulled and noticed. But, I sure can tell in this photo how he's not putting all his weight on it. He recovered fast and great. Took out the staples when we got home. Vet said, he healed great.....

Received an e-mail from an Anatolian owner, Susan, in Oklahoma who had entered her almost 2 yr. old girl Lucy for one day at the Gray Summit show in Missouri. Susan was looking for someone local who was showing Anatolians to get her Lucy ready for the show and handle her for that day. Since I was going I agreed to get her ready for her first show.

But first.....the grooming.....Lucy did great being groomed by me at Jamie's shop, Dog Naturals, in Branson West.

She was even up on the blow drying table. Good Lucy, clean Lucy.

Here's Lucy and I with the Judge. She did great for it being her first show. I encouraged Susan to handle her in the Match and they won BOB! Congratulations to Lucy and Susan. Thank you for letting me be a part of that....

Male Pup Goes Home To St. Joe, Missouri

Pat said her stallion is sooo very gentle with his new companion. His first encounter with him they gently and ever so carefully sniffed noses....

Grace is living on a Horse ranch in Victoria, BC with Ray and Lee and their Jack Russell Terriers, Will and Chloe

Some about her journey and new owners, Ray and Lee.....
"Well that was definitely a long day for both puppy and me.
It was very stressful when I got to the airport and they told me no dog was on the flight! Luckily the fellow also added that she just did not show as being on the flight...she still could be on it but somewhere along the way they did not mark her as being loaded into the plane. With a few phone calls to Lee who in turn was phoning the airline it all came down to no one knowing for sure if she was on the plane at all....Lee said the guy she talked to "can't find her anywhere" of course that did not sit well with either of us!

"The bottom line was I sat for 1.5 hours having no idea if my puppy was on the plane or in some other plane going to some other city.

"Finally as 9:00 pm approached I saw her crate sitting in the cargo bay.

"As soon as I started to walk near her crate she stood up and cocked her head to one side to get a better look at me. After some paperwork I was able to take her outside and give her some much needed water. As soon as I opened up the crate door she began to lick my face so I think she was very happy to see me. She was reluctant to come out of her crate but with a little time and some kind words she emerged.Thinking I was doing her a favour I gave her plenty of water and some food. After cleaning up the crate and putting fresh bedding in we got in the truck and headed for home. I should have known better ...and within a minute all of the water and the food came up and out, right into the centre cup holders. This was good as it made for simple clean up.

"After letting her know that it was okay she sat in-between the two front seats and promptly placed her head on my should and fell asleep within five minutes.

"We had a few rest stops on our way to the boarder then reach the ferry around midnight. We slept together in the back of the truck and got the first ferry back home at 6:00 am. She is really a brave little soul. After getting home and doing a little introduction to the Jack Russell's she settled right in. She follows me around the farm never letting me get too far away.

"All three are having their morning nap at this minute.

"We have chosen the name Grace for her barn/farm name"

Another e-mail, from Lee:
"I caught Grace on the couch in the office snoozing today, at first she was embarrassed then decided to pose for her picture. She makes me laugh all day, it's hard to get anything done. Grace is very, very smart and extremely gentle with the other
dogs and children. Chloe who I thought would be a problem just ignores her and acts like a grandma, Will is trying to establish who is the boss only Grace already knows she can out run him, so he is finally giving in and
making an effort to play. One of the boarders has a young Russell Beagle cross, and the two play quite hard. The neatest thing is to watch her when she catches a scent. Right now she has to smell, then taste everything.
Thanks so much for sending her she really is quite special."

"The male Russell was running up to me and even as a little puppy she jumped in-between us, took her stance with her front feet spread apart and her chest puffed up as big as she could make it. She let out a heck of a bark/growl and stopped the Russell in his tracks. They are working it out and had some good bonding time this morning. The older female Russell is dealing with her much better than I thought she would. She's kind of taken on a grandmother role."

"Grace and Will are the best of friends play all day long and go everywhere together. These were taken in the office while I am trying to work and have to keep stopping to laugh at them. Her latest is to sit on Will and look around with a goofy look on her face. Watching her develop and her instincts kick in has been a lot of fun, interesting and at times challenging! We are all working it out and thoroughly enjoy her in fact love her to bits. Even Chloe has found a place in her heart for Grace".

Copperhead Bite!

As I was walking, at dusk, from the automatic waterer my girl, Sirin, jumped at something in the grass next to me. She started barking and pouncing. She was within 4 feet of me. I thought it might be a snake as I could not see it because of the grass. Robbie, 8 yrs. old, quickly joined in the attack. Both Sirin and Robbie were trying their best to kill the snake. I called for my son, Christian, to bring a shovel quickly. Sirin and Robbie were continuing to persue their intruder. I watched helpless as they kept pushing the copperhead into the shelter. I was not about to go in as it was getting darker and vision was not good. I saw Robbie and Sirin leaping into the air trying to avoid the strikes of the frightened snake. He hid behind a board but not before striking Robbie twice in the muzzle. Both Anatolians would not leave. Christian got there with the shovel and a flashlight. I gently and ever so carefully made sure that my hand was nowhere near where the copperhead could strike, moved the board, and was able to get him to come out. Christian wacked him several times with the shovel and resolved the situation. Both Anatolians were satisfied. Robbie went into another shelter to recoup from the bites.

Poor boy, his muzzle swelled up pretty much and it was ever so sensitive to the touch. I gave him some antihistamine liquid to help with the swelling. Sirin did not get hit. It took Robbie about three days to recover. He's fine....

I have learned from the past that Anatolians and goats can get over a copperhead bite in 3-4 days (even young pups and kids). With no side effects. I did talk with a woman at that time about the copperhead. She shared with me that she had a 12 yr. old dog who got bit by a copperhead. She took him to the Vet. who gave the anti-venum. Her dog died within 3 wks. of liver failure! I was told by a physician that the anti-venum is more dangerous than the bite itself. The copperheads were coming out in the early evenings because of lack of water as the temps at that time were in the 100's. My waterer leaks so there is ground water. The pups love to play in the ground water.

Our pups are raised within our Saanen Dairy goat herd as well as being housebroken. Here they are eagerly catching some of the first shots of milk as I prepare to "juice" our goat, Flower. Robbie is lounging in the background. Pups are 8 wks.
